  Potter County Information

They call it “God’s Country".  With 1,192,713 acres of pristine wilderness it’s easy to see why. In Potter County you’ll see miles of rolling landscape dotted with the most charming country towns.

Visit the quaint village of Galeton Exquisite architecture and rich woods bear witness to the area’s lumbering past. Take a self-guided tour of the town and learn about life in the deep Pennsylvania woods.

Potter CountyTimber is the number one industry in Potter County. The Pennsylvania Lumber Museum, located right on Route 6, commemorates the trials and triumphs of Potter County’s lumbermen - past and present. Artifacts, exhibits and a simulated lumber camp recount the time when the majority of America’s white pine and hemlock lumber came from the north woods of Pennsylvania.

Hooked on trout? There are over 800 miles of streams in Potter County that offer quality-fishing opportunities for the novice and expert angler alike. From stocked streams to native trout waters, this county has long been recognized as a haven for fishermen and women.

Even the stars seem to shine extra bright in Potter County – especially  at Cherry Springs State Park. The first dark sky preserve in Pennsylvania, the park boasts 0% light pollution. The result is an astronomer's paradise.

The site of Potter County's worst disaster has recently been marked for preservation, Around the remnants of Austin Dam a beautiful park is being constructed as a memorial to the 89 lives taken when the dam broke in 1911. Visitors may view the site from an overlook or travel to the foot of the massive concrete structure.

You'll want to spend some time in the historic town of Coudersport. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places, the site has been called "a superb example of 19th century small town America". Tanning, glass, silk and brick industries made the town prosper during the late 1800s. Victorian-era shops and restaurants along Main Street give Coudersport an old fashion feel.

Potter County's eight state parks are "God's Country" at its best: verdant green, picturesque, wooded and inviting to the day tripper or camper wishing to get away from the hustle and bustle of the work week. The parks offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, as well as teaching all ages about nature and environmental issues. They add to the county's charm, whether ablaze with the colors of fall or covered in a blanket of white - but during summer the parks are at their best, dotted with picnic tables which offer the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors without going too far afield. Potter County can boast that some of its state parks were among the first in the state. And although Lyman Run's 45-acre lake has been drained pending replacement of the dam, plenty of picnic facilities and other recreational activities remain.
